Colored shoes can help make your ensemble unique.

resized_shoescolorAlthough finding the perfect wedding dress is a challenge, so is tracking down the perfect pair of shoes to compliment your gown. Should you wear heels or flats—something classic or trendy?

"You want to have stylish shoes that compliment that gorgeous dress," states Danielle Bobish,
Founder/Creative Director of New York City-based Curtain Up Events (www.curtainupevents.com).

"Going with matching shoes seems like the obvious choice, however, I really enjoy seeing shoes with a shot of color or a nice metallic hue. Maybe," suggests Bobish, "make your shoes that 'something blue'!"

According to Erika Phipps, bridal stylist,
La Belle Reve Bridal (http://www.labellereve.com/index.php), one of the biggest trends for 2010 is colorful shoes.

"If you are wearing a white dress," says Erika, "then why not add a splash of color to your feet, since you won't be running the risk of mismatching. Purple or black are the two most popular colors for the wedding season, she notes. However, it's your day, so choose whatever color you want."

Erika suggests either picking a shoe in your favorite color or perhaps one that matches your bridesmaids' dresses. "Don't be afraid to make your feet pop," she says.

Ariana Gestson, who is a fashion enthusiast and fashion blogger for District Bride Guide, says picking shoes for your big day should be the least stressful and most enjoyable part of organizing your wedding ensemble. "For about 90% of brides, shoes will be hidden under layers and layers of silk and tulle," she states. "This is why it has become so trendy to wear a statement color shoe under bridal gowns. Not only do brightly colored shoes make women feel sexy, it is also fun to know that under your traditional white dress you are making a fashion statement. While the shoes may be hidden throughout the ceremony," reiterates Gestson, "they should certainly come out to play for pictures. A bright dash of color against a white dress can look phenomenal in photos."

Embellishments and accents such as flowers, bows, feathers and bling are another great trend for shoes right now. "These embellishments also add more character to the overall bridal look. Add a bow for a touch of girlish sweetness; feathers for timeless elegance; or gems to show how much of a princess you are," concludes La Belle's Erika.

If the shoe fits: comfort and style

resized_ExaminerShoePic
>Shoes not only do they need to work with your gown, they also should be comfortable enough to get you through the day without sores or blisters. If guests see you grimace as you walk down the aisle, they may wonder if you're having second thoughts! Here, some tips on choosing stylish yet comfortable footwear for your big day.

Danielle Bobish, Founder/Creative Director of Curtain Up Events (www.curtainupevents.com) in NYC, agrees comfort should be a bride's first consideration because a wedding day is a long day.

"Once you’re in your dress there are pictures followed by a ceremony followed by a reception, etc.  Standing (and dancing) in heels for that long can be painful," notes Bobish.  "With that said, keep comfort in mind when looking to buy your wedding shoes.

[Your shoes] can still be beautiful, but being able to walk and dance is key. The second factor is, of course, beauty.  With some gowns, you will never even see the bride’s feet, but with others they are visible the entire time.  If that's the case," continues Bobish, "you want to have stylish shoes that compliment that gorgeous dress!"

"Shoes may be beautiful on the outside," adds Erika Phipps, Bridal Stylist La Belle Reve Bridal (http://www.labellereve.com/index.php), "but you may find that they can feel like a torture device for your feet if you are not careful.

Try the shoes on and walk around in them for a few minutes before you make your purchase decision, be sure that you get the right size, and width for your foot. And above all, make sure you break in your wedding shoes before the big day. Otherwise," continues Erika, "you may be in a world of hurt. If you decide to wear heels, the break-in rule is about four days. This means you should wear them for at least four to six hours for four days before the wedding. When it comes to the groom's shoes color and comfort are the two main things to pay attention to. When the groom is looking for shoes, he should first match the color, then the size, and then break-in his shoes, as well. The break-in rule for leather or men's shoes is generally three days."

Alissa Kraisosky, owner and designer for SummerJasmines (www.summerjasmines.com) suggests brides steal a trick used by models. "Choose bridal shoes that are one to two sizes larger than your usual shoe size. Walk around the shoe salon to test that they don't slip. Especially if you have a sky-high heel, this will provide more comfort and your feet will thank you later. In addition, a pair of foldable sandals or ballet flats are a great accessory if and when your shoes start to pinch. Stay stylish and yet keep (comfortably) dancing the night away!"

Sarah Carter will represent the Juanita community as she competes for the Miss Washington USA crown in October 2009.Miss Juanita USA has eye on crown

With her quick-witted answers and buoyant nature, one would never guess that the blue-eyed brunette Sarah Carter was once doubtful.

She couldn't envision herself being in a pageant and didn't think she had the guts to do it.But that's what made the idea so appealing.

"It was a challenge, so I said to myself it would take a lot of confidence to just kind of suck it all in and try out and just go for it - so I did," Carter said of her first pageant experience, when she was a Seafair Princess at age 18.

Since then, the Bothell resident has went on to compete in Miss Whatcom County for two years and is currently getting ready for her biggest pageant yet - her run for the Miss Washington USA crown. She will represent the community as Miss Juanita at the upcoming state pageant on Oct. 10.

"It's just opened me up to the world of getting involved in the community. I really enjoy it," Carter, 23, said of her pageant experience so far.

A recent Western Washington University graduate, Carter works for a financial firm and in her spare time enjoys volunteering for the Big Brothers Big Sisters organization. She is also actively involved in the C.H.O.R.E program, The Special Olympics and Meow Cat Rescue.

If she wins Miss Washington USA, Carter hopes to advocate for youth mentorship, including Big Brothers Big Sisters.

"I didn't realize the hour I spent with my little buddy was like his whole life," she said of the four years she mentored a boy while she was in college. "He looked forward to that one day. So it's just really rewarding that you can see what you're doing for them."

She hopes to raise awareness about the program to encourage more men to become volunteers.

"There's a lot of little boys out there who need that male influence ... it means so much to them," she said.

In the meantime, Carter, who describes herself as very driven and fun, is prepping herself for the upcoming pageant. Her coach, former Miss Washington USA Michelle Font, is helping Carter in all areas including interview, walk stylizing, posture, diction, stage presence, public speaking and wardrobe selection. In addition, she is working with a personal trainer at Miekos Fitness where she is put through intense workouts twice a week.

Carter also hopes to garner support from the local community. So far, local companies such as Kirkland-based Mod Beauty Squad have offered her products and services to help her with the pageant.

Another sponsor, Bellevue-based dress boutique La Belle Reve, has also offered to loan her a gown to wear during the evening gown portion of the pageant. Boutique owner Olga Earle will also attend the pageant.

"That's one of the things I'm looking forward to the most is just being able to play dress up," Carter said of the dresses.

She invites the public to attend a karaoke night that she will host beginning at 8 p.m. Sept. 10 at the Brickhouse Pub on Juanita Drive.

Though Carter's forte is dance, she said she just may get stuck singing.

"I'm an awful singer," she laughed. "I don't know what I'll sing yet. Probably something where you don't really have to sound good."

Last Friday night I attended a wonderful event at the new La Belle Reve' Bridal & Gown Boutique in Bellevue. This small boutique is elegant and sophisticated and very inviting. I had taken a look at the website before I went and was excited to see the many beautiful gowns, but little did I know that I would also meet some very interesting and important people in the bridal industry and so well connected in the community, by that I mean I met of course not only the beautiful Owner/Proprieter (in red), "Olga Earle", but also one of the most premier photographer's in the world Ilya Moshenskiy - Master Wedding Photographer of Ilya Wedding.

They had exquisite champagne and we noshed on an array of wonderful appetizers, and had some interesting conversations on the area there in Bellevue, in which there is some very interesting and exciting news.....(stay tuned!)
